Under our Amey service agreement we began the refurbishment and remodelling of the Harwich custody suite in March 2014.
The custody suite is used to detain those infringing the law whilst trying to enter the UK through the Port of Harwich.
Prior to the refurbishment the suite was very antiquated and did not meet current legislation.
We wrote a specification for this job inline with a report provided to the Home Office by their external consultants. The area was remodelled in order to provide 2 cells, a medical room, a shower area, an interview room, a holding room and an office.
In the early stages of the works asbestos was discovered, work on site was subsequently stopped and we were asked to bring in our specialist asbestos contractors. Upon making the area safe works continued and ran to a tight programme in order to get the suite reopened. Once the remodelling works were complete a full refurbishment was carried out from secure metal ceilings, to painting to flooring.
Specialist products such as cell doors and cell benches were purchased and the fitted by a nominated supplier.
The overall outcome of the job was one of a very high standard, the Harwich custody suite is now the model for future custody suite refurbishments, something we are very proud of.
